Recycled Items Become “Trashion”

By Karina Lopez

On Wednesday, April 29, 2015, Sun Valley Magnet School’s second annual Trashion Show event took place in the auditorium during seventh period.

Ms. Jennifer Crow stated,

“I would say the purpose of the Trashion show is to demonstrate how we can recycle trash by turning it into something beautiful. If we find new ways to use our trash, we won’t contribute to the destruction of the environment. You can make art out of anything.”

Ms. Crow and fellow art teacher Mr. Bradley Greer encouraged their classes to participate in the Trashion show by providing the materials for the students’ outfits, including newspapers, clear plastic, bubble wrap, clean black trash bags, straws, unused forks, breakfast containers, brown paper, colored paper, paper clips, paper towel rolls, white paper towels, bottle caps, soda cans, water bottles, and wire.

These materials were collected by Mr. Lesniak and Ms. Crow. Students were allowed to make hats, belts, purses, scarves, necklaces, bracelets, skirts, dresses, shirts, shoes, skirts, dresses, shirts, shoes, rings, headbands, earrings, glasses, cell phone cases, wallets, ties, and backpacks, but students weren’t allowed to make bathing suits.

If students designed an outfit but didn’t want to model it in the Trashion show, they could get a student from Ms. Winesburg’s period seven class to model it.

Before the Trashion show started, Mr. Lesniak showed on the big screen pictures of other Trashion shows and named the winners of the Earth Day poster contest. Winners of the poster contest were Jackie Diaz (first place), Cristina Guillen, Alex Arteaga, Adriana Ayala, and Richard Lopez. Two large pieces of green butcher paper were placed in both aisles of the auditorium to be used as the “Green Carpet” runway where models walked—and sometimes danced—to the loud pop music to display their outfits.

At the end of the Trashion Show, the judges quickly chose the winners. The first place winner was Jackie Diaz, who received a $15 Target gift card. Juliana Euyoque won second place ($10 target gift card), and Emily Leyva won third place ($5 Target gift card).

Winner Jackie Diaz urged others to create designs for next year’s show. She said, “To participate next year in the Trashion show, all that hard work will pay off and it will seem fun at the end.”
